Gary Nichols

A well-known notion about songwriting is that a song should tell a story. Another popular rule is to “write what you know.” Gary’s songs are about the people and family he’s known growing up in the South, always rich with vivid images and wry humor. The strong cultural connection between “down South” and “out West” is well-documented, and perhaps that explains Gary’s interest in writing about characters that populate the Old West as well. You’ll hear a mix of swinging Southern story songs, murder ballads, “cowboy-ish” songs, and songs about the awe of heartbreak. Gary’s influences include Guy Clark, Willis Alan Ramsey, John Prine, Blaze Foley, Kris Kristofferson, Jimmy Webb, The Beatles, Gordon Lightfoot, Don McLean, Joni Mitchell, and Townes Van Zandt.
